The brutal killing of Thandolwami Ndlovu, 21 from Newcastle KZN, by a residence manager at a Nelson Mandela University off campus has shaken the academic community, but what’s even more alarming is the university’s appalling silence in the face of tragedy. It took the courageous voice of the student’s mother to break the silence, revealing the painful truth about her child’s untimely demise in a heart-wrenching post on Facebook. She expressed disbelief that her child was taken from her and the university didn’t even acknowledge it. As her words resonated with the public, social media platforms erupted with outrage, with students, alumni, and concerned citizens demanding justice using a hashtag #JusticeForThando. The online movement forced students and other people to join the movement, raising questions about the university’s priorities and commitment to student safety and welfare.
The university’s delay in addressing the situation is deemed unacceptable, and now, as of 01 October, some students have taken it upon themselves to protest outside the residence where the Thandolwami Ndlovu was murdered.
