Honouring Mandela- A day to give

In celebration of Mandela Day and as a vibrant show of community solidarity, Nelson Mandela University’s (NMU)Engagement Office and HR Directorate teamed up with Shincheonji Volunteers on Friday, 18 July to restore and revitalize the Gelvandale High School Hostel of Hope grounds.

The university’s engagement office extended the invitation to Shincheonji Volunteers to encourage broader participation in their planned initiatives for Mandela Day. The volunteers swept pathways, cleared weeds, planted seedlings, and enhanced garden beds—transforming the hostel’s outdoor areas into well-maintained, welcoming spaces. This collaborative effort reflects the spirit of “67 minutes” of service to honour Nelson Mandela’s legacy.

Stakeholders praised the Shincheonji team, calling their contribution “truly a Godsend” due to their hard work and enthusiastic commitment. The day was widely hailed a success, with the bright yellow-clad volunteers leaving a lasting impression.

Through ‘Shincheonji Volunteers’, the congregation members of the Shincheonji Church of Jesus Gqeberha branch have worked together, displaying their heart of giving and serving. This initiative is one of their many efforts to give back to the community across their branches in South Africa.

In the Pietermaritzburg region, the volunteers teamed up with Seeff Property Group on a project to beautify Ward 25. Councillor Reginald Khanyile thanked the volunteers for their involvement and he is excited that these kind of events will only grow from strength to strength.

Sandwich and Soup Drive, hosted by Salesian Institute, was held in Cape Town. The event was filled with a lot of unity and brought several local organizations and businesses together whilst sharing a mission of giving back to the community. There was live music which created such a warm atmosphere, laughter, and dancing. Volunteers from all backgrounds bonded over preparing sandwiches and soup – turning the event into a moment of sincere connection.

As we honour Nelson Mandela’s memory beyond just a day or a month, let each of us act in our communities to perpetuate the values he held dear—justice, compassion, and reconciliation. Through the tireless nationwide efforts of the Shincheonji Volunteers, these values are alive in tangible ways—transforming lives, healing divisions, and extending hope to the overlooked corners of our country. By partnering with local churches, schools, and civic groups, Shincheonji Volunteers is shining a light in places dimmed by poverty, inequality, or injustice—truly spreading brightness, generosity, and God’s love wherever they go. In doing so, they don’t just honour Mandela’s legacy—they embody it, becoming living beacons of hope and catalysts for change in a world that so desperately needs both.
